What You Need To Know:
WATERPROOF is a heartwarming story. The writing is superb. There are some frightening moments when Thaniel shoots Eli, and when Thaniel gets into a fight inadvertently with Tyrene’s mentally retarded brother. There’s only one flaw in the movie that seems not to be rebuked, and that’s when Eli covers for Tyrene so that the police will not arrest her for kidnapping him. The trip back to Waterproof, however, allows the truth to come out, forgiveness to take place and conversion to occur. Burt Reynolds does a terrific job as the Jewish Eli. Sugar the grandfather is a delight. This is a very special movie that will help transform all who see it.

More Detail:
WATERPROOF is a strong redemptive tale that opens with an old black man on his porch in Louisiana talking about the day he “saw the Devil hisself.” Next, the movie cuts to Washington, D.C. A woman cab driver named Tyrene goes into a little old grocery store run by a Jewish man named Eli Zeal, played wonderfully by Burt Reynolds. After making her purchase and having some small talk with Eli, she goes home to her little boy, Thaniel, short for Nathaniel.
Later that evening, Thaniel sneaks out of his house so that he can join a gang by performing a dastardly deed. The two gang members tell him that he must rob the store and shoot Eli. He shoots Eli in the arm, but just as he runs out the door, his mother drives up in her cab. She grabs both him and Eli and puts them in the cab.
Not wanting to see her son in jail, she drives them all the way to her hometown of Waterproof, Louisiana. There, the story reveals she ran away when she was a young girl. Through the Christian love of her father Sugar and her mother, the demons of her past are finally exorcised and redemption occurs.
WATERPROOF is a heartwarming story. The writing is superb. There are some frightening moments when Thaniel shoots Eli, and when Thaniel gets into a fight inadvertently with Tyrene’s mentally retarded brother. As a result, the retarded brother knocks Tyrene unconscious for some time.
Through this event, it is revealed that Tyrene had an affair with the rich white boy who owns the town and that she was responsible for her brother’s retardation when she threw a rock to keep her brother from hurting her lover. Her big brother tried to protect her reputation and has been trying to drown his sorrow ever since in beer. Her trip back to Waterproof allows the truth to come out, forgiveness to take place and conversion to occur.
Besides the violence, there’s the issue of beer drinking and the years of lying. All of this is rebuked, however, in this strong Christian tale. Burt Reynolds does a terrific job as the Jewish Eli.
