WHERE THE MONEY IS

"HEADLINE: Where the Morals Aren’t"

What You Need To Know:

In WHERE THE MONEY IS, Paul Newman plays a prisoner sent to a nursing home after a supposed stroke. The former thief fools everyone, with the exception of his sexy nurse, who discovers his trickery. The nurse exposes his con and then befriends the man, and soon she sees an opening out of her “trapped” life with her husband. Though they want escape from different things, the two concoct a common plan of thievery to achieve their desires.

Despite the abilities of Newman and his talented supporting cast, the impotent storyline leaves little room for any of their talent to be displayed. In many cases, the characters have little or no qualms about getting involved in criminal activity or the initiative to do the right thing. Any emotional expressions were primarily confined to animosity and frustration between the characters. Without any morals or convictions the characters have no depth and give audiences little reason to care about them. Similar to ENTRAPMENT but without the eye candy of fancy gear and slick action, this movie depicts a seemingly humorous but depraved story about sacrificing family for short-term thrills and participating in criminal activity with no consequences.

More Detail:

In WHERE THE MONEY IS, a prisoner is sent to a nursing home after a supposed stroke. The former thief fools everyone, with the exception of his nurse, who discovers his trickery. The nurse befriends the man, and soon she sees an opening out of her “trapped” life with her husband. Though they want escape from different things, the two concoct a common plan of thievery to achieve their desires.

Paul Newman stars as Henry, a cool, levelheaded convicted thief who plays possum as a stroke victim to get out of prison. Sent to a nursing home because of an overcrowded prison hospital, Henry has fooled everyone except Carol (played by Linda Fiorentino), his caretaker at the nursing home who finds subtle clues of Henry’s caper. She tells her husband, Wayne (Dermot Mulroney of MY BEST FRIEND’S WEDDING), her suspicions about Henry, although Wayne, like a lot of other things concerning Carol, ignores the situation.

Determined to find Henry out, Carol tries talking to him, startling him by dropping a tray and even tries to arouse him with a lap dance. Not giving up, she and Wayne take Henry out on a picnic, where she wheels Henry off of a ramp into a river. Henry swims to shore startled yet amazed that Carol knew all along of his deception. Carol decides not to report him, citing that no one would believe her anyway, and the two begin to get to know one another. This displeases Wayne, who begins to notice their growing interest in each other.

Finding Henry to be personable, Carol opens up to Henry about her relationship with Wayne. As sweethearts in high school and married ever since, Carol feels trapped in a rut with Wayne, frustrated that he is content where they are, both geographically and mentally. Sensing the need to try something new, Carol convinces Henry to let her “do a job” with him. Because of Wayne’s suspicions, Carol proposes THAT Wayne join them in the bank robbery. He agrees, as does Henry, though it takes much convincing. The three embark on their plan to rob the bank, though the outcome changes each one of their lives.

Despite the abilities of Dermot Mulroney and Linda Fiorentino to support screen veteran Paul Newman in this movie, the impotent storyline leaves little room for character depth. In many cases, the characters displayed little or no qualms about getting involved in criminal activity or doing the right thing, and emotional expression was primarily confined to animosity between the characters. The depiction of Carol and Wayne’s relationship is often confusing, with the issue that comes between them merely indicated, but never fully explored.

WHERE THE MONEY IS depicts a woman who is fed up with her life. Feeling trapped by her marriage, she sees a way out through a deceptive criminal. Despite a talented cast, without any morals or convictions the characters have no depth and give audiences little reason to care about them. Similar to ENTRAPMENT but without the eye candy of fancy gear and slick action, this movie depicts a seemingly humorous but depraved story about sacrificing family for short-term highs and participating in criminal activity with no consequences.
