WINNING YOUR KIDS BACK FROM THE MEDIA

(C, M) Christian with very little scatological humor

More Detail:

If there is one course that is needed for parents, it is a comprehensive course that helps your children develop discernment and use the media properly. Regrettably, the slick new multimedia package from Gospel Films entitled WINNING YOUR KIDS BACK FROM THE MEDIA is not that course since it does not deliver on what it promises. Even my four children found the course boring and irrelevant, and were embarrassed by the “bathroom humor” in the first episode. It is difficult to come down hard on another Quentin Schultze work after our scathing review of his book THE BEST FAMILY VIDEOS (especially when our review brought down the wrath of Christians who contended that we should support Quentin’s book even though it would have led parents and children astray). Therefore, a great deal of effort was expended to find the practical, theoretical or anecdotal assistance promised in this book. However, it was not to be.

The problem is that the course seems to be built on advise without insight. There are solutions which will help your children use the media without being conformed to the images of Hollywood, but almost none of those solutions can be found in this course. If this course it had been packaged as an relationship-building tool, then it might have been recommended. However, as it is, there is a tremendous “truth in labeling” problem with this slick course.
