More Detail:
The documentary ZENITH came to MOVIEGUIDE® by way of one of our favorite Hollywood directors, Michael Rhodes. MOVIEGUIDE® found it absolutely captivating.
ZENITH – population 30 – tells the story of a tiny town withering on the plains of Kansas. Farmers are making per bushel less than what they made in the 1940s, but their costs have increased a hundredfold. Drugs, alcohol and escape to the big city seem to be destroying this community. Then, one woman decides to start a Bible study at the local church and from that Bible study comes a drive to produce and perform in what is known as the Great Plains Passion Play. The documentary ZENITH follows the people of ZENITH and nearby Stafford as they prepare to stage the passion play and shows the principals as they tell their stories of destiny and transformation.
As our director friend Michael Rhodes has said, ZENITH is a “deep and brilliant metaphor of faith and life in our current times.”
There is a very lyrical quality to this production. It pulls at the heartstrings without becoming maudlin. It keeps a very studied pace that reveals deep truths of the power of the Gospel to transform lives. The cinematography is incredible. Shots of farms and the men and women who live on them provide wonderful insights into a different and dying way of life, but this is not a story of despair. It is a story of redemption and power of the Gospel of Jesus Christ to redeem lives.
There is so much love in this production, it is hard to imagine that it wouldn’t transform all who watch it – all who have eyes to see and ears to hear. ZENITH is one of the best documentary movies of all time.
