More Detail:

TEAM MEKBOTS: ANIMAL RESCUE is a 3D-animated preschool action series. The show follows the Mekbots, a squadron of high-tech children who pilot animal-themed mechs. The crew travels worldwide, rescuing animals and people from dangerous situations. Will the Mekbots be able to work together? TEAM MEKBOTS was initially produced for the Peacock streaming service but is now available to stream on YouTube. This review will cover the three most prominent episodes of season one.

The series begins with the episode “Baby Gorilla Missing.” The Mekbots must find a baby animal in a jungle. Mateo, the Animal Rescue Team leader, pilots his Gorilla mech with reckless abandon. When the team finds the baby, Mateo eases up on his spontaneous behavior and calmly rescues the baby from a cave.

“Baby Gorilla Missing” showcases the best qualities of MEKBOTS. The art direction, animation quality, and voice acting are top-notch. Each episode has a runtime of eight minutes and has tons of action, but the writing doesn’t talk down to its target audience. It’s full of humor and likable characters. The show is not visually striking, but it stands on its own two feet.

The series continues in “Trash Trap.” The team answers the call to save sea turtles swimming into a tidal wave of human garbage. The children try various methods to clean up the mess, but an iceberg-sized pile of garbage heads toward the beach. Using Mateo’s plane stunt skills, the Mekbots transport the iceberg of garbage and save the turtles.

“Trash Trap” unveils the show’s biggest strength: its strong moral code. MEKBOTS is not explicitly Christian but strongly biased towards teamwork and common sense. The four protagonists of MEKBOTS value working as a unit, improvising their plans, and protecting the animal kingdom. The four heroes are young children with minor personality quirks, but they always put saving people and animals above all else.

Moreover, MEKBOTS has a strong pro-stewardship message. The crew helps animals from all across the world, from amphibians to reptiles. The crew takes extra care not to harm those animals and tries to respect their natural habitats. All the human characters show respect for the animal kingdom.

The final story is “Sweet Save.” Two butterfly researchers get stuck in a tree, and a bear is planning to eat them. Mei Lin, the pilot of the lion mech, chooses to pursue the rescue by herself. After a botched attempt, she decides she needs help and rescues the researchers with her co-workers.

“Sweet Save” is a fun story with a great lesson of being unselfish. However, it exposes the show’s moderate slapstick violence. There is no hand-to-hand combat or laser fire, but the children pilot heavy mech suits with incredible strength and dexterity. In these three episodes, the Mekbots slam into the ground, squash a pile of garbage with their fists and carve the terrain of a cliff. Moreover, there are two instances of Mekbots hitting their heads on the ground. Lastly, there are scenes where the Mekbots barely save animals or scientists and fall to their deaths. No one dies, but parents should be aware.

The first season of TEAM MEKBOTS: ANIMAL RESCUE is a welcome surprise. The series features high-quality animation, decent writing and a rock-solid moral compass. Moreover, teamwork, empathy with animals, and animal care are strong themes. However, there is light slapstick violence and minor peril. MOVIEGUIDE® recommends the show to younger viewers.
