More Detail:

THE STORY OF GOD is a National Geographic TV documentary series hosted by Morgan Freeman, who travels around the world to explore man’s relationship with God. In the first episode, titled “Beyond Death,” Freeman investigates the topic of death and the afterlife, and how various religions and cultures view death and the afterlife in different ways. In it, he explores Ancient Egypt, Aztec paganism, Christianity, and Hinduism in India.

The “Beyond Death” episode of THE STORY OF GOD gives a fair treatment to the historic and scriptural narrative of Christ. However, it’s bookended by paganism and a syncretistic view of religion where everyone is right. Of course, if all religious beliefs are true, then nothing is true.

The approach Freeman takes to exploring God is both dangerous and unhelpful. THE STORY OF GOD may hold some educational merit, but Freeman never manages to go beyond the surface of what his interviewees have to say. It’s not particularly enlightening. Extreme caution is advised because of the program’s defense and depiction of false and dangerous religions.
