More Detail:
In “Number One,” Kevin’s substance abuse continues to spiral out of control. He attends an alumni ceremony at his old high school where he receives an award. He tries to explain he’s unworthy of such an award, but everyone continues to idolize him. Kevin leaves the ceremony, wandering to the football field where he talks his way through flashback memories, starting with his initial knee injury and continuing through his failures as an adult. Drunk and miserable, he has sexual relations with another honored alumnus, a doctor named Charlotte, before stealing a page from her prescription pad to try to get more pain meds. While at the pharmacy, he realizes he forgot his Buddhist pendant, a meaningful gift his father gave him as a teenager. When he tries to retrieve it, Charlotte shuts him out, and Kevin collapses. Kevin goes to Randall, seeking help, only to discover their sister, Kate, has had a miscarriage.
“Number One” delves deeply into Kevin’s character, unveiling his emotions and personality in a way that enables viewers to connect with him in a new light. However, this episode deals heavily with Kevin’s sinful behavior and substance abuse. It also contains a reference to Buddhism and foul language. So, extreme caution is advised.
